Historic England Research Records

The Churchyard

Hob Uid: 222822
Location :
Hampshire
New Forest
Hyde
Grid Ref : SU2105012510
Summary : The remains of a probable 14th century hunting lodge within Sloden Inclosure situated on the southern side of a gravel ridge 620 metres NNW of Holly Hatch Cottage in the New Forest. The location of the lodge is indicated by earthwork banks and an external ditch which enclose a square raised platform measuring 37 metres across. The banks are a maximum of 3 metres in width and up to 0.85 metres in height. Fragmentary traces of an external ditch measuring a maximum of 3 metres in width and up to 0.3 metres in depth are visible on the north eastern and south western sides of the monument. Scheduled.
More information : (SU 21101250) Earthwork (OE) (1)

A small square earthwork placed in the centre of the ridge and
known as 'The Churchyard'. It was partially excavated in 1917
by the author but no dateable relics were found nor signs of
habitation. It is presumably a stock enclosure. (2)

Probable 14 century hunting lodge. (For similar sites see
Studley Castle SU 21 NW 8, Church Place, Ashurst SU 30 NW 1,
Church Place Denny SU 30 NW 17) (3)

A small enclosure, some 37.0m square, formed by a bank some
5.0m wide and 0.7m high surrounded by a ditch and with an
original entrance in the centre of the east side. Very similar
to the others mentioned in 3.

This class of work is identified with the 14th century Royal
Hunting Lodges partly on place-name evidence, partly on general
comparison with Hunting Lodges outside the Forest, and partly because roofing tiles have been found at some of the sites, and
the Lodges are known to have been roofed with West Country
tiles. (4)

No change: 1:2500 survey correct. (5)

The enclosure was surveyed by the RCHME in January 1995 and was as described by authority 3. The ditch bottom measures up to 2.8m in width. A short length of ledging is present on the outer face of both the N and W corners. The interior has been disturbed by trees and forest traffic and although a slight scooping was observed in the south of the interior, it is impossible to determine from surface evidence alone whether this is significant.

Surveyed at 1:2500 as part of the Sloden Inclosure earthwork survey. A full report is available in the NMR archive. (6)

This is probably the same feature as that recorded as SU 21 SW 107. (7)
