Summary : Caphouse Pit (Number 1 shaft) at Caphouse Colliery, with the heapstead and headgear over it, is a deepening of the original coal pit at Caphouse which was probably dug in the late 1770s or 1780s. Major investment by the Lister Kayes in their colliery in the early 1850s included the deepening of Caphouse Pit and the construction of an H-shaped heapstead. All the buildings of the 1850s at Caphouse Pit appear to have been replaced in the 1870s when further investment to bring the pit back into use led to the deepening of No. 1 shaft, the rebuilding of its heapstead and headgear, the sinking of the second shaft, No.2 shaft, partly as a furnace ventilation shaft, and the rebuilding of the steam winding engine house, dated 1876, and its associated boiler yard and chimney. Between 1904 and 1911 the present timber framed headgear and timber framed screens were erected.
