St Leonards Hospital

Hob Uid: 318956
Location :
Doncaster
Tickhill
Grid Ref : SK5924093370
Summary : A former leper hospital and later assembly room. Founded before 1225 and dissolved before 1536. The building had been built in 1470, and was repaired in 1851. The OS map reviser in 1970 wrongly reported the hospital and parish rooms demolished, but the DOE (HHR) lists the building as extant in 1981, and it was reported as extant in 2005, now known as Tickhill Parish Room, in the ownership of the church (Church of St Mary). The building has two storeys, it is timber framed, stuccoed with some later brick infilling and a pantile roof. The black and white timber front also features a stone plinth.
More information : [SK 5924 9337] ST. LEONARD'S HOSPITAL [G.T.] (Parish Room) (1)

St. Leonard's Hospital, for leper brethren and the poor, aged
and sick, was founded before 1225 and dissolved before 1536, but
refounded at a later date. The hospital was dependent on
Humberston Abbey. (2)

St. Leonard's Hospital, Tickhill: "There is an undated letter of
Archbishop Walter Gray, (b) apparently of the year 1225, addressed
to the clergy and laity of the deaneries of Doncaster and Retford,
exhorting them to contribute towards the brothers of St. Leonard
of Tickhill, whose sad condition he recommends to their charity.
(c). That it was a leper house is evident from a protection
granted by Henry III on 8 September 1263 for the lepers of the
hospital of St. Leonard 'Thikehil', for three years from the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (8 September) (d). It was
possibly identical with the Hospital in the Marsh." [SK 69 SW 6.]

The hospital of St. Leonard, Northgate, 'the present building
has an interesting black and white timbered front, with ...
Perp. pillars with battlemented capitals, and bears the date 1470,
...' (4)

The hospital of St Leonard was restored 1851. (5)

Note. (6)

Information as in Authority 4. (7)

This Hospital still exists. It is used as a Parish Room for
social functions in the locality. (8)

St. Leonards Hospital; a "guest house" for travellers, kept by
religious brethren, in Northgate.
On a projecting front are some curious old wood carvings, and
over one door is the inscription 'YIS MAD ION LEFTWUL'
(John Leftwul made this).

Above is the date 1470. (9)

The name is retained. It is still used as a Parish room. (10)

A two storeyed building part timber framed and extensively
restored. The ground floor of the W. front has ten wooden
polygonal posts, on a stone plinth, carrying embattled capitals
supporting a coving which extends the length of the frontage.
The upper floor has the vertical timber work replaced by
projecting brickwork but restored in such a manner that makes
the deception imperceptible from a distance. The infilling is of
modern brick, stucco covered, and the whole frontage is finished
in the traditional black and white decor. Two dates are visible,
one states "REPARD AD 1851" the other is an inscription as given
by Authy. 9. Another carved board reads LEONARDI HOSPIL. A modern
cottage abuts to the E and the N & S walls are of stone and
brick. The whole building is in a good state of repair.
See G.P. AO/60/6/3 from the W. (11)
