MONUMENT NO. 375089
County: Cambridgeshire
District: EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Parish: ELY
Monument Number: ( TL 57 NW 3 )
EARLY MEDIEVAL   INHUMATION CEMETERY   450 - 650
Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery located during construction work in 1947. The cemetery comprised about 30 inhumations, some with grave goods including brooches, beads, spearheads, buckles, a sword, knife and girdle hanger. The finds are in the University Museum of Archaeology. Possibly the site of a massacre because of the jumbled nature of the inhumations. The site has been identified with the pre-Ely site of Cratendune. Probably mid-5th-mid 7th century.
